The Father's
Dilemma
Ali was very upset when he phoned the Evangelical
school his daughter attends.
"I'm sorry, but I have to withdraw Zeina from your
school," he told the principal.
"But why? What is the problem?" the principal
asked.
Ali told him that the previous evening, when he had
gone in to kiss his daughter good night, she had
told him that they should pray before she went to
sleep. Ali had agreed and sat on the edge of her
bed waiting for her to say something.
"You have to close your eyes, Daddy," Zeina said,
and Ali complied.
And then Zeina said the three words that triggered
Ali's call to the school. "Ya Rabb Yessua" ... Oh,
Lord Jesus.
Ali told the principal, "I can't have Zeina learning
to worship Jesus. I'm a Muslim. I sent her to your
school because of your high standards, even though I
knew I would have to let her go to chapel and hear
about Jesus. But I never thought she would begin to
call him 'Lord'."
The principal talked with Ali for a long time,
reminding him that the school respected him as
Zeina's father. "God chose for her to be born into
your family and we will not deliberately do anything
to undermine your authority as her father. Even
though she attends our chapels, you can still teach
her the religion of your family. But in what other
school will she hear that there is a God who loves
her?"
Eventually Ali agreed to let Zeina stay. But the
principal recognizes that it is a struggle for this
father. "We strike a bargain with the parents," he
says. "We offer the highest academic standards at a
reasonable price and in exchange they let us tell
their children about Jesus. We just pray that the
Holy Spirit will use our chapels to draw the
children to the Lord."
