Breaking
Dividing Walls
After the July 2006 war in
Southern Lebanon, the men who came
to Fatima's village to help rebuild
damaged homes were the first
followers of Jesus Fatima had ever
met. It surprised her that
Christians would come to help people
who didn't share their beliefs. She
was even more surprised when she
found out that these men were from a
Druze background. For Druze to help
Shia? Unheard of in this land with
many tribal and religious divisions.
Fatima noticed, though, that
these men were changing more than
the rubble-filled landscape of her
village. Early in the rebuilding
process she told the men, "Something
happens when you come into a home.
You bring joy and peace; there is
more love in the family when you are
here." Later on, after the workers
had visited her home many times, she
noticed an even greater change. "I
can't explain it," she said, "but
I'm different. My heart is
changed."
Fatima and her husband, Ali,
have become the first in their
village to follow Jesus. Because
there is no fellowship group for
them there yet, they recently spent
a week in the mountains with
followers of Jesus from a Druze
community.
In a troubled country where
religious differences run very deep,
their hearts were filled with joy to
know that, through Christ, Shia and
Druze have become part of the same
family of God.
